With the stars shining so bright, we trembled from the cold but kissed regardless, and as our animal spirits played their games somewhere above, so the connection was made. It’s hard for me to say if I realised it at the time, but looking back, it was in that kiss that everything changed. In the act of the kiss itself, and in the first breath of air after separating our lips as we looked at each other with the traffic lights behind turning green then red. We were two little humans. Two bags of bones who happened to find each other one Thursday afternoon like any other, and yet there was something more at play. Something without a name. After the kiss, we’d hurried to mine as fast as our poor little feet allowed. There had been food and wine, and then we’d gone ahead and undressed each other on my bed, and with the moon watching us through the window, our bodies had created a magic that lifted our souls clean out of our skin, and together we drifted through the sky, and although it was freezing cold, we didn’t feel a thing, and in the hours that followed we danced with our animals spirits and as life below ticked along as it always had, we existed in a place infinitely wonderful and infinitely strange.
